The nine members serve without pay for three-year terms. The Board functions only when in session. Other sections of the statutes state or imply that a local Board of Education has full power to operate the local public schools as it deems fit in compliance with state and federal mandates. The general mandatory powers and duties of the Board are defined in Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes. The Montgomery Township Board of Education, both as a state agency and as the elected representative body of the citizens of the Township on school matters, is legally responsible for education in this school district.
